KTM 490 RC: New Twin Platform Instead of Chinese Tech from the 450 RC

The 490 RC is set to become the smallest model in KTM’s new sport range. More recent information shows that it is not based on the 450 RC sold in China, but on a purpose-developed twin-cylinder platform.
  • Newly developed parallel twin with just under 500 cubic centimetres
  • The first model on the platform is the 490 Duke, with its premiere expected in late 2027
  • The 450 RC from China remains a separate model with different technology

KTM boss Gottfried Neumeister has confirmed the expansion of the RC range in a company blog post. Alongside the 990 RC R, a 790 RC and a 490 RC are set to follow. Almost nothing was known about the smallest of the three at first, and early reports linked it to the 450 RC that KTM offers in China. A different picture is now emerging.

What is the KTM 490 RC based on?

The 490 RC is being built on a newly developed technical platform for the lower middleweight class. At its heart is a new parallel twin displacing just under 500 cubic centimetres.

According to media reports, the engine uses a 270-degree crankpin offset. That refers to the angle at which the two pistons run offset from one another. This layout produces an uneven firing interval and a grittier character, an approach that has become widespread in this class. Output of 55 to 65 hp (around 40 to 48 kW) is considered likely, and an A2-compliant version is expected.

The platform is intended to carry at least three models. As is KTM tradition, a naked bike leads the way: the 490 Duke. It will be joined by a travel enduro and a fully faired sports bike, which should be the 490 RC. Accounts differ on the development partners. Several reports point to joint development by KTM and Bajaj, some adding that the basis could be derived from the current LC4c family used in the 390 models. Other accounts describe a completely new design positioned above the LC4c range in both price and performance.

What sets the 490 RC apart from the Chinese 450 RC?

The 450 RC is a model in its own right, based on the CFMoto 450SR S and sold in China. The 490 RC, by contrast, is intended to become the global entry-level model in the RC range and to use a different technical basis.

Several reports emphasise this distinction explicitly. The similarity in the names suggests a relationship that is not supposed to exist. For the European market this is an important point, because KTM has already dropped the RC 390 there. In India the RC 390 continues, though still with the older LC4 single displacing 373 cubic centimetres. An update to the third-generation Duke engine has yet to materialise. The fact that Neumeister names a 490 RC but no new RC 390 suggests that the 490 is intended to take over as the entry point into the sport range in key markets.

What does the 490 Duke prototype reveal about the technology?

The 490 Duke prototype spotted so far looks more grown-up than a pure entry-level machine and borrows solutions from its larger siblings. Since the 490 RC is said to share the same basis, a good deal can be inferred from it.

The main frame shows parallels to those of the 790 and 990 Duke. At the rear, a swingarm bent on the right-hand side stands out, curving around a collector ahead of the end silencer. Visually it recalls the solution used on the 990 Duke and the 990 RC, but it was newly designed for the 490 series. The suspension and damping also come from WP and are new, as is the exhaust system. A single brake disc handles stopping duties at the front, with the brake supplied by WP Braking Systems. The subframe is made of tubular steel and the tail lights are integrated into the indicators. On the prototype shown, the bodywork and headlight mask still matched the 390 Duke, while the production model is expected to receive a design of its own.

When will the KTM 490 RC reach the market?

KTM has not named an official date. Word has it that the new platform will be shown for the first time in late 2027, with the 490 Duke leading the way.

It is unclear whether only the naked bike will be shown initially or whether the Duke and the adventure model will reach dealers at the same time. The platform is expected to be in showrooms by spring 2028 at the latest. The fully faired sports bike should not be far behind. One account puts late 2027 directly on the 490 RC, while other information ties that date to the premiere of the platform. No manufacturer figures are yet available for price, weight or final output.

Where does the 490 RC sit within the RC range?

The 490 RC will be the smallest model in a range topped by the 990 RC R. The 790 RC is set to slot in between.

Neumeister put the expansion plainly: „the 990 was first and we’ll have a 790 and a 490“. He points to other brands that have long been present in the middle and lower displacement classes, and describes the segment as growing. An early test mule of the 790 was photographed on the road back in July 2026, built on the latest generation of the 790 Duke.

The road to this point was a long one. KTM showed the RC8 prototype at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show, and it went into production around five years later. When production ended in 2015, the brand went a decade without a twin-cylinder sports bike, as the RC 390 and RC 125 served a different segment. It was the 990 RC R that brought KTM back, a project reportedly born out of the initiative of a group of engineers working after hours. The line-up now also includes the track-only Track version without road approval and a dedicated cup series. The 490 RC therefore joins a model offensive that KTM is spreading across several model years.

What competition awaits the 490 RC?

The field is crowded. Aprilia has served the segment since 2020 with the RS 660 and followed up three years later with the RS 457 for riders holding an A2 licence.

Yamaha covers the class with the R9, R7 and R3. BMW is said to be working on two middleweight sports bikes with parallel twins: an F 450 RR as well as a model based on the future range positioned between the F 450 and F 900. Above those sits the four-cylinder M 1000 RR. The Kawasaki Ninja 500 also counts as a direct rival for the 490 RC. For KTM, then, more is at stake than a single model: without the smaller RC derivatives, the brand would be left out of a class that is increasingly becoming volume business for European manufacturers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the KTM 490 RC based on?

The KTM 490 RC is set to be built on a newly developed platform for the lower middleweight class. It shares its chassis and engine with the 490 Duke, which is planned as the first model in this range. The parallel twin displaces just under 500 cubic centimetres.

  • How much power does the KTM 490 RC have?

There are no official figures. Output of 55 to 65 hp (around 40 to 48 kW) is considered likely for the new parallel twin. A version restricted to the A2 class is expected.

  • Is the KTM 490 RC the same model as the 450 RC?

No. The 450 RC is sold in China and is based on the CFMoto 450SR S. The 490 RC is set to be built on a different platform and to become the global entry-level model in the RC range.

  • When will the KTM 490 RC arrive?

No date has been confirmed. The new platform is expected to be shown officially for the first time in late 2027, beginning with the 490 Duke. The first models should reach dealers by spring 2028 at the latest.

  • Which models belong to the KTM RC range?

At present the twin-cylinder RC models consist of the 990 RC R and the track-only 990 RC R Track. They are set to be joined by a 790 RC and a 490 RC. KTM boss Gottfried Neumeister has confirmed this.
