- The bike is said to be based on the 75-degree V3 from the V3R 900 E-Compressor, but naturally aspirated
- Output figures of 120 to 130 hp (around 88 to 96 kW) are being discussed
- Market launch is expected mid-2027 at the earliest, with first details possibly at EICMA 2026
Over the past two years, Honda’s new V3 engine with its electrically driven compressor has attracted a lot of attention. So far, the focus has mainly been on a naked bike, the V3R 900 E-Compressor. According to reports from Japan, however, the same engine is set to take on a second role. Honda is said to be developing a supersport bike from it without forced induction. It is meant to take on the new generation of middleweight sportbikes both on the track and on the road. Honda has not officially confirmed the project so far.

What is known so far about the Honda V3R 900RR?
The Honda V3R 900RR is expected to be a supersport bike with a 900 cc V3 engine without a compressor. Honda has neither announced nor confirmed the model so far, and all details are based on information from Japanese industry circles.
According to these reports, Honda is preparing the naturally aspirated version of the new V3 specifically for sporting use. The goal is said to be clear: the bike should fight for wins in the Supersport World Championship and thereby also boost sales of the road version. Besides the name V3R 900RR, there is also speculation about the name CBR900RR. Whether and when Honda will unveil the supersport bike remains open.
Why is Honda looking for a successor to the CBR600RR?
The CBR600RR is considered technically outdated and is struggling against the new generation of supersport bikes. This applies both on the race track and in comparison with other road bikes.
The current version of the CBR600RR was first shown at the Suzuka 8 Hours in 2023. In 2024, it returned to the European market after a break of several years. However, the basic design is considerably older. In recent comparison tests of middleweight supersport bikes, the Honda four-cylinder was therefore no longer even included. In recent years, the class has moved away from the inline four. Instead, manufacturers are increasingly relying on three- and two-cylinder engines with more displacement.
For Honda, this is above all a problem in racing. In Europe, results in the Supersport World Championship are closely linked to sales figures of the production bikes. Honda continues to compete there with the CBR600RR under the classic regulations and has to hold its own against much more modern competition. To get out of this situation, Honda is said to have decided on a completely new machine.
The Next Generation regulations of the Supersport World Championship
The Supersport World Championship runs as a support series to the Superbike World Championship and is particularly popular in Europe. It is contested with machines based on production motorcycles. The permitted modifications are more tightly restricted than for Superbikes. Originally, fixed displacement limits applied: up to 600 cc for four-cylinders, up to 675 cc for three-cylinders and up to 750 cc for twins.
Because more and more suitable production models disappeared from the market, the grid shrank. Since 2022, the so-called Next Generation regulations have therefore applied. They also allow motorcycles with larger displacement. To keep performance comparable, throttle opening, rev limit, minimum weight, modification options and injection maps, among other things, are adjusted. Traction control and ABS have been banned since 2017. Since 2019, all teams have used a spec ECU.
Models such as the Ducati Panigale V2 and the MV Agusta F3 800RR benefit from this opening. Yamaha has entered the class with the YZF-R9, and the ZXMOTO 820RR has already won a race. A 900 cc V3 from Honda would fit exactly into this environment. On the road, the V3R 900RR would face the Yamaha R9, the KTM 990 RC R and the Ducati Panigale V2, among others.

Which engine will the V3R 900RR get?
The V3R 900RR is expected to get the liquid-cooled 75-degree V3 with 900 cc, but without the electric compressor. The engine has two cylinders at the front and one cylinder at the rear.
It is not supposed to be simply the same engine with the compressor removed. Since there is no boost pressure, Honda is likely to adjust the compression ratio. There could also be differences in individual engine components and in the engine management. So far, there are only rumors from Europe about the output. They speak of 120 to 130 hp (around 88 to 96 kW). This would reportedly put the supersport bike above its direct rivals.
With the compressor, Honda says it is aiming for performance from the 900 cc V3 comparable to that of a 1,200 cc engine. Honda has not yet given any specific output figures.
What could the chassis of the V3R 900RR look like?
The chassis is meant to take full advantage of the slim design of the V3. Despite its 900 cc, the V3R 900RR could therefore get a very compact chassis.
Even with the engine concept, Honda emphasized how narrow the V3 is. The vehicle shown at the time was barely wider than a 200 mm rear tire. A slim and compact chassis should give the supersport bike particularly agile handling.
The question of the swingarm is still open. The V3R 900 E-Compressor uses a trellis frame and a single-sided swingarm derived from the CB1000R. A trellis frame is rather unusual for Honda, which usually relies on twin-spar frames. For the supersport bike, a classic double-sided swingarm is considered quite possible.

From engine concept to prototype: how the Honda V3 came about
Honda has presented the new V3 step by step. It started with an engine concept at EICMA 2024, followed a year later by the prototype of a complete motorcycle.
For Honda, it is the first V3 in around 40 years. The brand’s earlier V3 engines were two-strokes. The new four-stroke V3 stood out above all for its electrically driven compressor, for which Honda had previously filed a patent.
The first trademark applications appeared in early 2025. In February 2025, the name “V3R” was registered in the UK. At the end of March 2025, two separate applications followed in North America: “V3R” and “V3R E-COMPRESSOR”. Even then, this was interpreted as a sign that there could be one version with and one without a compressor. According to this, a naturally aspirated version could turn out particularly light and compact, even compared with middleweight motorcycles of 650 to 850 cc.
At the end of January 2025, Minoru Kato, head of Honda’s Motorcycle and Power Products business, spoke about the state of development. He described the project as a new challenge in the field of combustion engines. Kato reported that he had ridden the test bike himself in Kumamoto shortly before and described the result as a success. He did not yet reveal the displacement at the time. However, he highlighted the compact engine, the light vehicle and the electronically controlled boost across the entire rev range.
On November 4, 2025, Honda then showed the V3R 900 E-Compressor Prototype at EICMA in Milan. According to Honda, the engine is based exactly on the layout of the 2024 concept and now displaces 900 cc. According to the manufacturer, it is the world’s first electronically controlled compressor for motorcycles. It compresses the intake air independently of engine speed and is meant to deliver plenty of torque spontaneously even at low revs. Honda calls the development concept “Non-Rail Roller Coaster” and says it is further developing the model for series production.
What role does the V3R 900 E-Compressor play?
The V3R 900 E-Compressor remains the technical flagship of the V3 family. According to rumors from Europe, it is set to come to market as a premium model, possibly as early as 2027.
The prototype is built as a streetfighter and has asymmetrical side fairings. On the tank it carries the new “Honda Flagship WING” emblem, which Honda plans to gradually introduce on its top models. The V3R 900RR would use the same engine platform without a compressor and would be clearly aimed at sport riders and racing. This makes the V3 one of the Honda topics that could play an important role among the new motorcycles for the 2027 model year.

When will the Honda V3R 900RR arrive?
As things stand, the Honda V3R 900RR is expected mid-2027 at the earliest, with the second half of 2027 considered more likely. Additional information could already be revealed at EICMA in November 2026.
Honda has officially confirmed neither the supersport bike nor a timeline. The launch would fall into a period in which Honda also wants to move forward again in other racing series. In MotoGP, new rules with 850 cc apply from 2027, and Honda’s new machine is said to have already made a good impression in testing. A competitive supersport bike would complement these efforts in production-based racing. For buyers currently torn between the Yamaha R9, KTM 990 RC R and Ducati Panigale V2, the choice would grow if Honda actually brings the V3 supersport bike. There is no information on prices yet.
