CFMOTO is taking the adventure motorcycle market by storm with its new 1000MT-X. After years of developing bikes under its own brand and for other manufacturers, CFMOTO is now launching what may be the most competitively priced middleweight adventure bike on the market. The 1000MT-X isn’t just another motorcycle—it’s a direct challenge to established players like KTM and Honda, offering premium engineering at an accessible price point.

The Engine: An Evolution of KTM’s LC8c Architecture

At the heart of the 1000MT-X is a 946cc parallel-twin engine that produces 113 horsepower and 98 Newton-meters of torque. This isn’t a completely original design—CFMOTO has licensed the engine architecture from KTM’s LC8c platform, which also powers the KTM 990 Duke. However, the implementation is distinctly CFMOTO’s own, with unique tuning and integration.

The engine features a liquid cooling system, fuel injection, and a robust construction designed for both street and off-road use. At 5,700 RPM, the engine delivers peak power, while maximum torque arrives at 4,500 RPM, making it responsive across a wide range of riding conditions. The engine’s reliability is underscored by CFMOTO’s 5-year warranty on engine components—a confident statement about the bike’s durability.

Suspension and Chassis: KYB Components with 230 mm Travel

The 1000MT-X uses KYB suspension components throughout, with 230 millimeters of travel both front and rear. This generous travel is perfect for adventure riding, allowing the bike to handle rough terrain with aplomb while maintaining composure on tarmac. The upside-down telescopic forks at the front are fully adjustable for compression, rebound, and spring preload, giving riders fine control over the bike’s handling characteristics.

The rear monoshock is similarly adjustable and works in concert with a steel-tube frame that balances strength with light weight. The chassis geometry is optimized for the adventure touring role, with a moderate rake and trail that encourages stable cruising while remaining agile enough for twisty mountain roads.

Braking duties fall to Brembo, with a dual 320 mm front disc and a 260 mm rear disc. The cornering ABS system provides confidence when braking hard in the twisty bits or when the road surface becomes uncertain during off-road sections.

Electronics: Five Riding Modes and Three-Stage Traction Control

Modern adventure bikes need sophisticated electronics, and the 1000MT-X doesn’t disappoint. Five riding modes adapt the engine’s power delivery and suspension behavior to different conditions:

  • Street Mode: Full power with standard damping for city riding
  • Road Mode: Full power, optimized for highway cruising
  • Rain Mode: Reduced power and aggressive traction control for slippery conditions
  • Gravel Mode: Linear power delivery with adjusted traction for unpaved surfaces
  • Offroad Mode: Maximum engine braking and minimal traction intervention for true adventure

The three-stage traction control system allows riders to dial in the appropriate level of intervention. In higher stages, the system is more aggressive about cutting power when wheels slip. In lower stages, riders get more freedom to modulate traction themselves—essential when navigating technical terrain where maintaining momentum is crucial.

A 5-inch TFT display serves as the info hub, displaying speed, engine parameters, and mode selection. Bluetooth connectivity enables smartphone integration for navigation and calls, though the display remains highly legible in bright sunlight.

Ergonomics and Equipment: Ready for Touring Out of the Box

The 1000MT-X is designed with long-distance touring in mind. The seat height of 850 mm is adjustable to 870 mm for riders who want a slightly higher seating position, striking a balance between control and accessibility. The seat itself is generously proportioned, offering both rider and passenger comfort during extended journeys.

Foot pegs are positioned for both street and off-road work, and the windscreen provides adequate wind and weather protection. A 15-liter fuel tank gives the bike a respectable range of around 400 kilometers between fill-ups, though this will vary depending on riding style and terrain.

Handguards protect hands from wind and debris, while a centrally mounted exhaust keeps the bike narrow and provides ground clearance. LED lighting throughout maximizes visibility and reduces power consumption, and the headlight throw is sufficient for safe night riding on unlit roads.

Weight and Competition: Light and Affordable

At 199 kg dry weight, the 1000MT-X is lighter than many of its competitors. This low mass makes the bike nimble and easy to manage at low speeds or when stopped on unpredictable terrain. For comparison, the Yamaha Ténéré 700 weighs 184 kg, but the KTM 990 Adventure tips the scales at 229 kg. The CFMOTO splits the difference, offering the power of a larger bike with handling closer to middleweight machines.

The competitive landscape for adventure bikes in the 900-1000cc category includes the KTM 990 Adventure and 990 Duke, the Yamaha Ténéré 900, and various other options from European and Japanese manufacturers. The CFMOTO’s key advantage is price—at 9,999 euros, it undercuts the KTM 990 Adventure by a significant margin while matching or exceeding it in many specification categories.

Pricing and Availability

CFMOTO is launching the 1000MT-X at an introductory price of 9,999 euros in Germany, with availability beginning in May 2026. This aggressive pricing is a bold move that will force competitors to reconsider their market positioning. The bike comes standard with a 5-year engine warranty, indicating CFMOTO’s confidence in the engine’s longevity and their commitment to customer satisfaction.

For the adventure bike enthusiast looking to maximize capability while minimizing expense, the 1000MT-X represents a compelling proposition. CFMOTO has clearly done its homework, selecting quality component suppliers like KYB and Brembo, licensing proven engine technology, and focusing engineering efforts on creating a coherent, capable adventure platform.
