BMW Development Chief Moves to KTM: What It Means for Both Brands

Christof Lischka will take over as Chief Technology and Product Officer at KTM, Husqvarna, and GasGas on October 1, 2026. The longtime BMW development chief is already the fourth senior executive to move from Munich to Mattighofen.
  • Christof Lischka will become Chief Technology and Product Officer (CTPO) of KTM AG on October 1, 2026.
  • He will be responsible for research and vehicle development of the KTM, Husqvarna, and GasGas brands.
  • Stephan Reiff, Klaus Allisat, and Johann von Balluseck are three other former BMW managers already working at KTM.

Since the Indian Bajaj Group took a controlling stake in KTM, much has been changing in Mattighofen. A notable pattern has emerged: several key figures in the new leadership team come from Munich, specifically from BMW Motorrad. The most significant move so far was announced by the publicly listed Bajaj Mobility AG on June 3, 2026, regarding its wholly owned subsidiary KTM AG. Christof Lischka, until recently head of development at BMW Motorrad, is joining the KTM executive board.

What Role Will Christof Lischka Take at KTM?

Christof Lischka will become Chief Technology and Product Officer of KTM AG on October 1, 2026, assuming overall responsibility for research and vehicle development. In this newly created board position, he is expected to secure the technological direction of the KTM, Husqvarna, and GasGas brands for upcoming vehicle generations. This also includes the strategic advancement of the product portfolios. The mandate explicitly mentions the task of consistently expanding quality and reliability standards, an area that has moved noticeably to the forefront at KTM following the recent restructuring.

What Experience Does the New CTPO Bring?

According to his future employer, Lischka has more than 25 years of experience in vehicle development. Within the BMW Group, he held leadership roles in the areas of chassis, vehicle dynamics, braking systems, overall vehicle integration, and development strategy. Since August 2019, he led the entire motorcycle development division of BMW Motorrad as Vice President Development, succeeding mechanical engineer Karl Viktor Schaller at the time.

Beyond his management career, Lischka is known as an active motorcyclist. He is a passionate off-road rider who has competed in motocross and rally events and has privately ridden KTM models for many years. Among the accomplishments cited by the company are participations in the Roof of Africa and the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, as well as an altitude record on the Nevado Ojos del Salado in Chile.

Why Is Lischka Leaving BMW?

Lischka unexpectedly departed BMW Motorrad in spring 2026, sparking speculation about his next move. The switch to Mattighofen comes after just a few months’ pause. At BMW Motorrad, the development leadership has since been reassigned.

KTM CEO Gottfried Neumeister emphasizes the combination of expertise and passion above all. “Christof Lischka embodies exactly what defines our company: deep technical expertise, strategic vision, and a genuine passion for motorcycles,” the CEO explains. Lischka understands development not only from a management perspective but also from a rider’s point of view, he adds.

Lischka himself highlights the brand’s proximity to sport and technology. “KTM is a brand where innovation, motorsport, and emotion are closely intertwined,” he is quoted as saying. He describes his goal as follows: “My ambition is to work together with the teams in Mattighofen to develop products that are at the highest technological level, convince on the road and off-road, and inspire our customers anew every day.”

Which Other BMW Managers Have Moved to KTM?

Lischka is not the first senior executive to move from Munich to Mattighofen — he is already the fourth. Stephan Reiff has been Chief Commercial Officer at KTM since April 2026, responsible for marketing and sales. At BMW Motorrad, he headed the customer, brand, and sales division from July 2022 to the end of 2025.

Klaus Allisat assumed the position of Vice President Sales Europe at KTM effective May 4, 2026. His background is noteworthy: from September 2010, he led Husqvarna Motorcycles, which at the time was under BMW management before the brand later became part of the KTM portfolio. Johann von Balluseck has been Vice President Sales Rest of World since May 2026, responsible for sales outside Europe. For BMW Motorrad, he had coordinated business in North America, among other regions.

How Is the KTM Board Structured After the Bajaj Takeover?

With Lischka’s appointment, the executive board of KTM AG is now fully staffed, according to the company. From October, the board will consist of Gottfried Neumeister as CEO, Petra Preining as CFO, Stephan Reiff as CCO, and Christof Lischka as CTPO. The publicly listed parent company Bajaj Mobility AG will continue to be led by Neumeister and Preining.

The appointment comes during a phase of profound changes. Stefan Pierer stepped down from his board mandate in March 2025, after which Neumeister assumed sole operational leadership. In November 2025, Bajaj completed the acquisition of a controlling stake, and in the process, the former Pierer Mobility AG was renamed Bajaj Mobility AG. KTM AG, headquartered in Mattighofen, consolidates subsidiaries including KTM Sportmotorcycle GmbH, Husqvarna Mobility GmbH, WP Suspension GmbH, and GASGAS GmbH, according to the company. Bajaj Mobility AG is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and in the prime market of the Vienna Stock Exchange.

What Does the Move Mean for KTM’s Model Strategy?

Lischka brings detailed knowledge of BMW’s model planning, which elevates the significance of this move beyond a mere personnel change. From his time as head of development, he is familiar with the new models planned from Munich for the coming years. At the same time, the overlap between the BMW program and the segments in which KTM now also competes is likely to be considerable. BMW had recently held back in the off-road segment, with the BMW G 450 X being its last decidedly off-road-oriented venture. With Lischka’s off-road affinity and technical background, KTM is signaling that vehicle development, product strategy, and quality are at the center of its ongoing realignment. The company emphasizes that insights from motorsport will continue to flow directly into series production development.
