Honda V3R 900 Super Sports: V3 Supersport Likely Without a Compressor

At EICMA 2026, Honda shows for the first time what a supersport bike with the new 900 cc V3 could look like. The design concept has a full fairing and winglets, and there is plenty to suggest that the naked bike’s electric compressor is missing here.
  • Design concept with a 75-degree V3 and 900 cc, created at Honda’s design studio in Rome
  • Full fairing, winglets, single-sided swingarm and an Akrapovic exhaust system
  • No details on output, series production, price or timing

It has long been suspected that Honda is planning more than just a naked bike with its new V-triple. In Milan, there is now the first visible evidence. Alongside the planned production version of the V3R 900 E-Compressor, which is due in dealerships in 2027, the Honda stand features a fully faired sportbike with the same engine. It is not a finished motorcycle but a design study. Still, it shows where the new V3 platform could be heading and joins the EICMA 2026 new arrivals for the 2027 model year as a glimpse of the future.

What is Honda showing with the V3R 900 Super Sports at EICMA?

In Milan, Honda is exhibiting the design concept of a supersport bike powered by the 900 cc V3. It is not a rideable prototype. The concept is meant to show what a sporty version of the new engine family could look like.

The bike was designed by Honda’s design studio in Rome. Almost every year, the team is tasked with designing a possible future model, and the result usually appears at EICMA. This time, the brief was a sporty derivative of the new V-triple.

The name is not entirely settled yet. Both V3R 900 Super Sports and VIIIR Super Sports Design Concept are in circulation. Since this is a concept, the name may still change before any production version.

Does the Honda V3R 900 Super Sports have an electric compressor?

Officially, this has not been clarified, as Honda has not confirmed the exact engine layout. However, the evidence points to a naturally aspirated engine without the electric forced induction of the naked bike.

A Honda representative hinted at the show that the concept differs from the naked bike in one important respect. He did not say which one. The front end offers a clue: fresh air only enters the bike through a small opening below the fairing nose. That fits better with an engine without forced induction.

On the V3R 900 E-Compressor, an electric motor drives the compressor. It sits behind the steering head and forces additional air into the engine, regardless of engine speed. Honda promises strong torque even at low revs and output comparable to a 1,200 cc engine. On the supersport bike, this technology would probably be dropped. Honda has not released any performance figures for the concept.

How does the concept differ from the V3R 900 E-Compressor naked bike?

The biggest difference lies in the shape. Instead of the asymmetrical lines of the naked bike, the supersport has a very compact full fairing with integrated aerodynamic elements.

These include winglets, small wings on the fairing that generate downforce at high speed. At the rear, a single-sided swingarm holds the wheel, and the exhaust system comes from Akrapovic. The concept is therefore drawn as a standalone supersport bike rather than a naked bike with a fairing bolted on afterwards.

Both models share the engine: a liquid-cooled V3 with a 75-degree cylinder angle and 900 cc displacement. Two cylinders point forward, one to the rear. In the naked bike, the engine sits in a trellis frame, combined with a single-sided swingarm and an upside-down fork. Whether the supersport gets the same chassis is not known.

What role could the V3 supersport play in racing?

A model like this could bring Honda back to the front in the Supersport World Championship. However, the manufacturer has not said whether the concept is intended for that.

In WorldSSP, Honda currently fields the CBR600RR. Against the Yamaha R9, the Kawasaki ZX-6R, the Ducati Panigale V2 and the ZXMoto 820RR-RS, it has mostly come off second best recently. Instead of further developing the CBR600RR, Honda could take a new route with the 900 cc V3. It remains open whether the concept will become a road bike or whether it initially just previews a future racing platform. On the road, a production model would face exactly the middleweight sportbikes Honda also competes against on the track.

Honda and the V3: an engine concept with a racing past

The V-triple is not new territory for Honda. In 1982, the two-stroke NS500 race bike debuted with a V3 engine, and in 1983 Freddie Spencer used it to win Honda’s first world title in the 500 cc class. In the 1980s, the concept also made it onto the road with the two-stroke sportbikes MVX250F and NS400R. A V3 supersport would therefore continue a line that began in racing at Honda.

Will the Honda V3R 900 Super Sports go into production?

There is no statement on this. Honda has announced neither plans for series production nor a price or a date.

However, earlier concepts from the Rome design studio show that such studies often turned into production models. The CB650R traces back to the CB4 concept, the X-ADV to the City Adventure, and the Africa Twin had a predecessor at the show in the True Adventure. Sometimes it takes a long time: the Africa Twin Enduro Sports was shown as a concept in Milan in 2016 and has only now, ten years later, gone into production. Whether the V3R 900 Super Sports will follow this path remains open. With the concept, though, Honda shows that the V3 can become the basis for more than one model.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the Honda V3R 900 Super Sports?

The V3R 900 Super Sports is a supersport design concept that Honda is showing at EICMA 2026. It has the 900 cc V3 from the V3R 900 E-Compressor, a full fairing, winglets and a single-sided swingarm. The name VIIIR is also in circulation.

  • Does the V3R 900 Super Sports have the e-compressor?

Honda has not confirmed this. A Honda representative only mentioned an important difference from the naked bike, and the small air intake at the front suggests a naturally aspirated engine without a compressor.

  • How much horsepower does the Honda V3R 900 Super Sports have?

There are no figures. Honda has not stated power or torque for the concept and has also left the exact engine layout open.

  • When will the V3R 900 Super Sports come to market?

There is no date, and Honda has not announced plans for series production either. The related V3R 900 E-Compressor naked bike is due in dealerships in 2027.
