Indian Cuts the Scout Range: Only Six of 17 Models Remain

For model year 2027 the US Environmental Protection Agency has certified only six Scout variants from Indian. Several models and the entire Limited +Tech trim level disappear from the range.
  • Six Scout models for 2027 instead of 17 in model year 2025 and 15 this year
  • The Scout Classic and Sport Scout RT are dropped; of the 999 cc models only the Scout Sixty Bobber remains
  • The Limited +Tech trim disappears, three Limited versions stay in the range

The Scout has been the foundation of Indian’s model range for years and at the same time the entry point into the brand. Over the past two years a single motorcycle has grown into a family with a barely manageable number of variants. Now the development is heading in the opposite direction. A certification filed with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for model year 2027 lists only six vehicles from the Scout family. That fits the course the new management has announced since the change of ownership in February 2026.

Which Scout models stay in the range for 2027?

According to the EPA certification, six variants remain: the 101 Scout, the Scout Bobber, the Scout Bobber Limited, the Sport Scout Limited, the Super Scout Limited and the Scout Sixty Bobber. Nothing else appears in the documents any more.

That means several well-known names are disappearing. The Scout Classic is dropped completely, as is the Sport Scout RT that was only unveiled in November 2025. Among the smaller 999 cc models, only the Scout Sixty Bobber survives. The Scout Sixty Classic and the Sport Scout Sixty are no longer on the list. One important caveat: the certification comes from a US authority and therefore reflects the American market first and foremost.

How did one Scout turn into 17 variants?

The reason lies in a combination of many base models and several trim levels. For model year 2025 Indian introduced five Scout models with the new SpeedPlus 1250 engine, each of them available with two additional trim packages.

The five base models were the 101 Scout as the flagship, the classically styled Scout Classic, the blacked-out Scout Bobber, the touring-oriented Super Scout and the sportier Sport Scout. On top of those came the Limited and Limited +Tech levels, which added traction control, cruise control and a round four-inch touchscreen, among other features. A few months later three Scout Sixty models with 999 cc followed, each in standard and Limited trim. All told, that added up to 17 combinations.

For 2026 Indian removed a few variants, but added two new ones with the Sport Scout RT Limited +Tech and the Scout Bobber marking the company’s 125th anniversary. In the end there were still 15 options in the price lists.

What happens to the Limited +Tech trim?

The Limited +Tech level is dropped for 2027 without a direct replacement. Three models carrying the Limited badge remain.

Exactly what each trim level contains is not clear from the certification. It seems likely that the technology package will move into the Limited version in future, but that has not been confirmed so far. For the Sport Scout RT the change has immediate consequences, because it was only ever offered as a Limited +Tech.

Why is Indian tidying up the range right now?

The trigger is the change of ownership. Since 2 February 2026 Indian has no longer been part of the Polaris group and is instead majority-owned by the investment company Carolwood LP. The new chief executive is Mike Kennedy, who has announced a considerably slimmer range.

As early as a press conference in February, Kennedy said the choice on offer should become easier to navigate. He conceded that this might upset some customers, but saw mostly advantages: “We think it’ll be easier for our riders to shop it, easier for our dealers to manage, and we’ll be more responsive as a manufacturer.”

From the company’s point of view there are practical reasons as well. Fewer variants mean less effort in production and in the supply chain. At the same time manufacturing is being concentrated at a single site. The two overseas plants are being closed and production will take place in Spirit Lake in the US state of Iowa, supported by the foundry and machining operation at the Monticello plant in Minnesota. Development continues in Burgdorf in Switzerland and in Wyoming, Minnesota.

What does this mean for newcomers?

The entry point into the brand becomes narrower, but not more expensive. The Scout Sixty Bobber remains the cheapest model and costs around 8,670 euros (9,999 US dollars) in the United States, while in the United Kingdom it is listed at 10,995 pounds (around 12,610 euros / 14,820 US dollars).

A classically styled Scout from model year 2026, by contrast, starts at around 19,450 euros (22,424 US dollars) in the US. With the big touring models the gap is even wider: the Chieftain PowerPlus costs roughly 30,350 euros (35,000 US dollars).

Kennedy himself has admitted that the Scout Sixty is still too much motorcycle for many beginners. It weighs more than 227 kg (500 pounds), although it does offer a low seat height of around 65 cm (25.6 inches). Even so, a smaller or cheaper model is not planned. Asked about it directly, Kennedy said no, and he was equally clear on the subject of electric drive. Both are regarded inside the company as a distraction from the core business. A return of the discontinued FTR is not up for discussion either.

What are the consequences for Europe?

For European buyers the loss of the Sport Scout Sixty matters most, because that model was explicitly offered in an A2 version for younger riders as well. The EPA list refers to the US market, however, so the European range may differ.

Europe plays an important role for Indian by the company’s own account. Kennedy named Mexico and Germany as markets in which the brand performs particularly well. The Scout Sixty Bobber was temporarily unavailable in Europe because of emissions regulations, but later returned.

The timing is remarkable in the case of the Sport Scout RT. It was only presented in November 2025 and promoted as a new direction for the model line, with fixed lockable panniers offering more than 37 litres of storage, a quarter fairing and a 19-inch front wheel. Aaron Jax, vice president at Indian Motorcycle, said at the time: “Scout is a market-leading, globally recognised icon, and with the debut of the Sport Scout RT, we’re redefining what it means to ride an Indian Scout.”

What comes next

The Scout is unlikely to be the only model line that gets cut back. The heavyweight Chief cruisers and the touring models are expected to be simplified as well. Certification data for model year 2027 is not yet available for those.

One fundamental technical question remains open: whether Indian will continue to offer two engine families in parallel, the air-cooled ThunderStroke and the liquid-cooled PowerPlus. The strategic direction, on the other hand, is clear. Kennedy put it like this: “Our immediate focus is going to be on middle- and heavyweight cruisers, baggers, touring, and soon to be trikes.”

That places the reshaping of the Scout range in a wider context. Model year 2027 will be the first that Indian has planned entirely under the new ownership structure. The figure of six variants is the first visible evidence of how consistently the company is implementing the course it has announced.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How many models does the Indian Scout range include for 2027?

Six Scout variants are certified for model year 2027. There were still 17 in model year 2025 and 15 this year, so roughly two thirds of the choice disappears.

  • Which Indian Scout models are being discontinued?

The Scout Classic and the Sport Scout RT vanish from the range entirely. Among the 999 cc models the Scout Sixty Classic and the Sport Scout Sixty are dropped, leaving only the Scout Sixty Bobber.

  • Is the Limited +Tech trim still available?

No, the Limited +Tech level no longer appears in the certification for 2027. Three models carrying the Limited badge remain. Indian has not yet said whether their equipment level will grow.

  • How much does the cheapest Indian Scout model cost?

At around 8,670 euros (9,999 US dollars) in the United States, the Scout Sixty Bobber is the cheapest model in the range. In the United Kingdom the price is 10,995 pounds (around 12,610 euros / 14,820 US dollars). An even more affordable entry-level model is not planned.

  • Is Indian planning an electric motorcycle or an entry-level model?

No, chief executive Mike Kennedy has explicitly ruled out both. The company is concentrating on cruisers, baggers and touring models, and on trikes in future.
