The Catalan Grand Prix should have been Pedro Acosta’s first MotoGP Sunday victory. Instead, the sixth round of the season in Barcelona turned into the most chaotic Grand Prix of the year, with two race stoppages, serious injuries to Alex Marquez and Johann Zarco, and fierce criticism from riders directed at race control.
  • Alex Marquez suffers collarbone fracture and cervical vertebra fracture, Johann Zarco tears cruciate ligaments and fractures fibula
  • Riders demand relocation of starting grid at Barcelona after another Turn 1 crash
  • Pedro Acosta sharply criticizes decision to restart a third time: “People’s health comes before the show”

The MotoGP paddock left the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday evening with an uneasy feeling. What had begun as a promising race with Pedro Acosta on pole position turned within a few hours into one of the most dramatic Grand Prix afternoons in recent MotoGP history. Two red flags, two riders hospitalized, six retroactive time penalties and a race result that was not finalized until more than two hours after the checkered flag. And at the center of it all, a debate that has been simmering in the premier class of motorcycle racing for years: How many restarts are acceptable when riders have already been seriously injured?

What happened at the 2026 Catalunya GP?

The Catalan Grand Prix on May 17, 2026 was interrupted by two serious crashes within minutes of each other. What unfolded on this Sunday at the 4.657-kilometer circuit in Montmeló followed a frightening chain reaction.

In the first half of the race, Pedro Acosta controlled the field from the front. The KTM rider had already set the pace on Friday, claimed pole position on Saturday and finished second in the sprint. Everything pointed to the long-awaited first Sunday victory in MotoGP. Behind Acosta, Alex Marquez and Raul Fernandez fought an intense battle for the podium positions.

Then, on lap 12 of 24, the shocking moment. On the acceleration zone between Turn 9 and Turn 10, Acosta’s KTM RC16 suddenly lost power. The engine stuttered, the throttle response cut out. Acosta raised his hand to warn the riders behind him, but Alex Marquez was riding just a few tenths of a second behind and had no chance to avoid him. The Gresini rider slammed into the rear wheel of the KTM and was catapulted uncontrollably across the grass strip. His motorcycle disintegrated in a series of tumbles, debris flying across half the track. Fabio Di Giannantonio was also hit on the hand by the flying front wheel from Marquez’s Gresini Ducati and crashed, while Raul Fernandez and Johann Zarco were likewise caught by flying debris. The red flag was immediately waved.

Acosta later explained the technical failure: “It seems it was an electronic fault; it was as if the bike suddenly cut out, and everything stopped working. The throttle stopped responding, and it caught me just as I was tucking into the fairing.” KTM team manager Aki Ajo confirmed an electronics problem but was initially unable to provide more specific details.

How serious are the injuries to Alex Marquez and Johann Zarco?

Alex Marquez was treated trackside after the high-speed impact, was conscious and was subsequently taken by ambulance to the Hospital Universitari General de Catalunya. Examinations revealed a fracture of the right collarbone, which was surgically stabilized with a plate on Sunday evening, as well as a marginal fracture of the seventh cervical vertebra (C7), which according to initial diagnosis does not require surgery and is to be further evaluated in the coming week. Marquez posted on social media that evening: “Everything’s under control!! I have surgery tonight, but I couldn’t be in better hands.”

Johann Zarco sustained his injuries during the restart. The LCR Honda rider collided with Luca Marini in Turn 1 and then ran into the rear of Francesco Bagnaia’s Ducati. His left leg became wedged between the swingarm and seat of the Ducati, after which he was dragged through the gravel trap. The feared femur fracture did not materialize, but the injury list was still considerable. According to an official statement from his LCR team, Zarco suffered damage to the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments as well as the medial meniscus of the knee, plus a small fibula fracture in the ankle area. Zarco posted a video message from his hospital bed: “It’s mostly the knee—the ligaments gave out, but the femur isn’t broken. There’s a small fracture at the bottom of the fibula, on the outside of my left ankle. Just to reassure you, though: it’s more of a scare than anything serious, let’s say.”

LCR team principal Lucio Cecchinello had previously confirmed that Zarco sustained no upper body injuries and no concussion. The Frenchman was kept in hospital overnight for observation and was set to travel to France on Monday. Zarco had been having a strong weekend until the crash: fifth in practice, fifth in qualifying, fifth in the sprint and sixth in the race at the time of the first stoppage.

Why are riders criticizing the decision to restart a third time?

Race direction decided after both stoppages to restart the Grand Prix each time. The final race was held over 12 laps, half of the originally planned distance. This decision was met with disbelief by numerous riders.

Pedro Acosta was particularly outspoken. Speaking to the Spanish broadcaster DAZN, he said: “It’s not the most pleasant feeling in the world. When something like what happened today occurs, it’s really awful that we act as if nothing happened and go out on track as normal.”

In the subsequent press conference, Acosta went further. He considered three starts after two red flags unnecessary when two riders were already in hospital: “It’s all well and good that the show must go on, but we often forget that we’re the ones putting on the show. People’s health comes before the performance we can put on.” Acosta also made a concrete demand: “I think it has to be clear: after a second red flag, we don’t go out anymore. Period.” He announced that he would raise the issue at the safety commission meeting at the next race in Mugello.

Jorge Martin, who was himself carrying a concussion from Friday’s practice session, struck a similar tone: “For sure, the show must go on, as always. But after three times, maybe it’s time to stop the thing. Three restarts is quite dangerous. You completely lose concentration and then to go back in… I’m confident that I can do it, but there are other riders that cannot.”

Yamaha rider Alex Rins described the emotional toll: “When I saw Alex on the floor, my heart broke. I was really affected, I was trying to breathe a lot in the box because it’s not nice to see a mate on the floor.”

Luca Marini, who was himself involved in the Zarco crash in Turn 1, said the moment triggered memories of the serious accident at Suzuka. Nevertheless, he spoke out against abandoning the race and wanted to finish it.

Why is Turn 1 in Barcelona a recurring safety problem?

The braking zone before Turn 1 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has been considered one of the most dangerous spots on the MotoGP calendar for years. According to Brembo engineers, riders brake there from around 338 km/h down to about 100 km/h within 4.6 seconds over a distance of 257 meters. Takaaki Nakagami had already suffered a serious crash in this zone in 2023, Enea Bastianini was hit in 2024. And now in 2026, the braking zone once again involved three riders in a dangerous crash.

The core of the problem: The starting grid is located far from Turn 1. Riders reach the first braking point at speeds significantly above normal racing pace, because the slipstream effect and the lack of aerodynamic downforce in “dirty air” further exacerbate the situation.

Fabio Di Giannantonio, who ultimately won the race despite his hand injury, described the situation: “Starting that far from the first corner, we arrived there with a lot of speed, but not the speed that we are used to arriving at on a normal lap. So we don’t really know the perfect braking point for the first corner. So a small mistake can become a big mistake and make a big disaster.”

Di Giannantonio, like the majority of riders, advocated moving the start line closer to Turn 1: “The perfect thing, I think every rider would agree on this, would be starting as close as possible to the first corner.” In previous years, Jack Miller among others had already called for such a measure. So far, it has remained at the discussion stage.

Joan Mir agreed: “By the first corner we reach fifth gear. The braking point is very long. There are 20 bikes stopping there from 300k per hour. The room for mistakes is very narrow.” Mir expressed confidence that the issue would be addressed in the safety commission.

Who won the 2026 MotoGP Catalunya GP?

Fabio Di Giannantonio won the Catalan Grand Prix, which was run over 12 laps. It was the VR46 Ducati rider’s first victory since the Qatar Grand Prix in 2023 and the first win for the VR46 team since that race. Team boss Valentino Rossi watched the action from the pit box.

Di Giannantonio had himself crashed during the first incident after being struck on the hand by the flying front wheel from Marquez’s Gresini Ducati. Despite the injury, he took part in both restarts and worked his way forward from the back in the final third of the race. Three laps from the end, he overtook Pedro Acosta, who had been leading at that point but whose tire grip was fading dramatically. Within two laps, Acosta dropped from first to fourth. In the final corner, he was then hit by Ai Ogura and crashed, his motorcycle destroyed.

In parc fermé, Di Giannantonio put his emotions into perspective: “First of all, I really hope that everyone is safe. I’m happy about the win, happy about the performance, because for sure we need to give credit to the team who did a great job. But the real win today is that everybody is more or less safe.”

The result was significantly altered more than two hours after the race finished. Five riders received retroactive 16-second time penalties for low tire pressure: Joan Mir (originally second), Alex Rins, Jack Miller, Toprak Razgatlioglu and Raul Fernandez. Only Bagnaia was cleared, as his low tire pressure was demonstrably caused by a leaking rim. Ai Ogura also received a three-second penalty for the contact with Acosta.

The corrected final result: Di Giannantonio won ahead of Fermin Aldeguer (Gresini) and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo), who secured the factory Ducati team’s first Sunday podium of the season. Marco Bezzecchi moved up to fourth, Fabio Quartararo completed the top five as the best Yamaha rider. Mir dropped to 13th due to the penalty.

What does the championship standings look like after the 2026 Catalunya GP?

Marco Bezzecchi extended his championship lead to 15 points despite a difficult weekend. The Aprilia rider, who struggled with the feel of his RS-GP all weekend, finished fourth in the corrected result. That sounds unspectacular, but in the context of his direct rivals’ results it was a success. Teammate Jorge Martin came away empty-handed after a collision with Raul Fernandez in Turn 5 of the third start. It was Martin’s fifth crash of the weekend. Martin had been running second behind Acosta at that point and could have taken the championship lead with a finish.

Bezzecchi assessed the situation pragmatically: “In the end, we just had to get through the weekend somehow.” He had felt good on Friday but then found no further improvement while everyone else got faster. On the debate about the race stoppage, he took a pragmatic stance: “I don’t want to dwell on that thought for too long, because it’s not my job to decide whether this race continues or not. My job is to race!” At the same time, he praised his team for handling the tense situation: “My team dealt with the situation after the stoppage very sensitively, even though I certainly wasn’t easy to deal with. They managed to create a space for me to retreat to in all that chaos.”

Di Giannantonio moved to within 26 points of Bezzecchi with his victory and now sits third in the championship. Pedro Acosta’s deficit stands at 50 points after his retirement. Defending champion Marc Marquez, who missed Barcelona due to a shoulder operation, now lies 85 points behind Bezzecchi.

What do the events in Barcelona mean for MotoGP safety?

The incidents in Barcelona are part of a recurring pattern. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has repeatedly produced serious crashes in Turn 1 in recent years. Nakagami in 2023, Bastianini in 2024, Zarco, Bagnaia and Marini in 2026. Each time a discussion in the safety commission followed, each time structural changes failed to materialize.

Acosta summed up the demand: After a second red flag, the race should no longer continue. He announced that he would raise the issue again at the safety commission at the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello (May 29–31) and expects a significantly higher attendance than recently. Asked whether a riders’ union could help in such situations, Acosta was skeptical: “I don’t think a riders’ association would accomplish anything. If none of us stand our ground, we’ll just go back out.” Instead, there needs to be a clear rule.

The debate hits MotoGP at a sensitive time. The 2026 season is the last with the current 1000cc machines. On Monday after the race, the final official test of this era took place at the Barcelona circuit. From 2027, the new 850cc motorcycles will arrive, and Pirelli will take over as the new tire supplier. Whether the opportunity of the regulation overhaul will also be used to revise the restart rules remains to be seen.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who won the 2026 MotoGP Catalunya GP?

Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46 Ducati) won the twice-restarted Catalan Grand Prix. The Italian worked his way through the field after being involved in the first crash himself and overtook Pedro Acosta three laps from the end. The corrected final result after five time penalties: Di Giannantonio ahead of Fermin Aldeguer (Gresini) and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo).

  • How seriously was Alex Marquez injured at the Catalunya GP?

Alex Marquez suffered a fracture of the right collarbone, which was surgically stabilized with a plate on Sunday evening, as well as a marginal fracture of the seventh cervical vertebra (C7), which according to initial diagnosis does not require surgery. The Gresini rider was taken to Hospital Universitari General de Catalunya after the high-speed crash on lap 12.

  • What are MotoGP riders demanding after the Barcelona crash regarding Turn 1?

Several riders, including Di Giannantonio and Mir, are calling for the starting grid to be relocated closer to Turn 1. The current long straight from the grid to the first corner means riders arrive at unusually high speeds, making the braking zone particularly dangerous. Pedro Acosta is additionally demanding a clear rule that no further restart should take place after a second red flag.

  • Why was the 2026 MotoGP Catalunya GP stopped twice?

The first stoppage came on lap 12 when Pedro Acosta’s KTM suffered an electronics failure and Alex Marquez crashed into the stricken machine at high speed, causing a multi-rider pileup. The second red flag was triggered at the restart when Johann Zarco, Luca Marini and Francesco Bagnaia collided in Turn 1. Both incidents resulted in hospitalizations.

  • What are the MotoGP championship standings after the 2026 Catalunya GP?

Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) leads the championship with a 15-point advantage. Fabio Di Giannantonio moved up to third, 26 points behind. Pedro Acosta sits 50 points back after his retirement. Defending champion Marc Marquez, who missed Barcelona due to shoulder surgery, is 85 points behind Bezzecchi.
