- Marquez wins ahead of Di Giannantonio and Martin, who finishes third with a broken radius
- Pecco Bagnaia breaks two bones in his right foot after a collision with Fermin Aldeguer
- Marco Bezzecchi crashes after contact with Marquez, the stewards impose no penalty
A red flag, two heavy crashes and a pass just before the finish: the sprint at the Qatar Grand Prix has shaken up the 2026 MotoGP title fight once again. Marc Marquez crossed the line first on the factory Ducati, 0.862 seconds ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio on the VR46 Ducati. Two weeks after his crash at Phillip Island, Jorge Martin rode to third place with a fracture that has not yet healed. For the Aprilia rider it was a remarkable performance, but just not enough for his championship maths. Because Di Giannantonio passed him on the final lap, Marquez now leads by 49 points and has his first match point on Sunday.

What does Marquez need on Sunday to win the title?
Marquez will be world champion on Sunday if he wins the Qatar Grand Prix and Martin fails to score a single point. Even 15th place would be enough for Martin to push the decision to the next race.
Marquez now has 411 points, Martin is on 362. After Qatar there are two more race weekends in Portimão and Valencia, with a combined 74 points up for grabs. Before the sprint the gap was 44 points. For Marquez to have any title chance on Sunday at all, he had to score at least five points more than Martin in the sprint. With twelve points for the win against seven for third place, he did exactly that.
The final lap made the difference. Had Martin held on to second, he would have scored nine points and been only 47 points behind. Then Marquez would not have reached the required lead even with a win on Sunday. If Marquez does not win the Grand Prix, the title fight also moves on to Portimão.
The 22-lap Grand Prix starts on Sunday at 7 pm local time, which is 5 pm in Germany. Marco Bezzecchi starts from pole position, with Marquez and Di Giannantonio alongside him. Martin once again has to start from eleventh on the grid.
Why was the Qatar sprint red-flagged?
The sprint was stopped with a red flag after the first lap because Fermin Aldeguer had ridden into Pecco Bagnaia at the final corner. Bagnaia lay motionless in the gravel trap and was carried away on a stretcher.
At the first start, everything initially went Bezzecchi’s way. The Aprilia rider had taken pole with a new Lusail lap record of 1:50.028 minutes and kept the lead into Turn 1. He opted for the medium rear tyre, while Marquez followed him on the soft. Bagnaia started from fifth, went up the inside of his teammate and briefly ran second. He ran slightly wide on the exit of Turn 2, Marquez took the position back, and Bagnaia then dropped back to fifth.
Under braking for Turn 16, the last corner before the start-finish straight, Aldeguer on the Gresini Ducati tried to pass Pedro Acosta. The Spaniard, who had only returned from injury this weekend, braked too late and hit Bagnaia’s bike. The Italian was thrown high into the air in a highsider, where the rider is flung over the motorcycle, and tumbled several times through the gravel.
Race Direction penalised Aldeguer with a double Long Lap. The rider has to ride twice through a longer loop next to the racing line and loses time as a result. Aldeguer served the penalty in the restarted sprint and finished eleventh.
The original grid was used for the restart, with Bagnaia’s slot left empty. Instead of the planned eleven laps, only ten were run. Two riders used the break to switch rear tyres: Martin changed from medium to soft, Di Giannantonio went the opposite way. Bezzecchi stayed on the medium, Marquez on the soft.

How badly is Bagnaia injured?
Bagnaia has suffered a double fracture in his right foot. As Ducati announced after the examination in the Medical Centre, the fourth and fifth metatarsals are broken.
The two-time MotoGP world champion was conscious after the accident as the marshals attended to him in the gravel. He is being taken to a hospital in Doha for further examination and treatment. It will also be decided there whether he needs surgery. Ducati has not yet announced whether Bagnaia can ride in Sunday’s Grand Prix. After the race, Marquez wished his teammate a speedy recovery and described it as a nasty crash.
How did the collision between Marquez and Bezzecchi happen?
At the start of lap four, Marquez ran slightly off line at Turn 1 and Bezzecchi dived into the gap on the inside. When Marquez steered back onto the racing line, the two touched and Bezzecchi crashed.
At the restart, this time Marquez got the better launch and led into Turn 1. Bezzecchi came back quickly and passed the Ducati at Turn 15 on the second lap. Marquez immediately countered around the outside and was back in front before the final corner. Two laps later came the attack at Turn 1 that ended in the gravel for Bezzecchi.
The contact was so hard that the airbag in Marquez’s leathers deployed, as the Spaniard himself explained after the race. The stewards, the race officials of the motorcycling world governing body FIM, investigated the incident during the sprint and classed it as a racing incident with no further action. Aprilia boss Massimo Rivola responded in the garage with sarcastic applause and a shake of the head.
For Bezzecchi, the crash has major consequences for the championship. He went into the sprint 67 points behind and is now 79 points adrift of Marquez. Mathematically he still has a chance, because another 25 points are on offer on Sunday. But he would have to score considerably more points than Marquez, otherwise he will be out of the title race after Qatar.

How did Martin make the podium with a broken radius?
Martin rode from eleventh on the grid to third and even led at one point. In the end, by his own account, he lacked the strength to fend off Di Giannantonio.
Two weeks ago, the Aprilia rider broke his right radius, one of the two forearm bones near the wrist, in a crash during the sprint at Phillip Island. A first comeback attempt in Sepang ended after practice. Before the Lusail weekend, Martin estimated his wrist at around 50 percent of its normal strength, up from about 20 percent in Malaysia. The bone is still broken, though, he said. On Friday the medical check gave him the green light.
For the restart, Martin deliberately chose the soft rear tyre so he could attack. On the very first lap he passed several riders, including Pedro Acosta. He then overtook Raul Fernandez at Turn 2 and Johann Zarco and was fourth after two laps, setting the fastest lap times in the field. After Bezzecchi’s crash, he moved past Di Giannantonio and even attacked Marquez at Turn 6. By his own account, Marquez briefly struggled to ride normally because of the deployed airbag. Martin took the lead, but Marquez reclaimed it as early as Turn 7.
From then on, Marquez pulled away lap by lap. With a time of 1:52.302 minutes, he extended his lead to around four tenths by the end of the sixth lap. Martin defended second place against Di Giannantonio for a long time but had to let him through on the final lap. At the flag he was 1.519 seconds behind the winner.
After the race Martin said he was proud of his work. With the adrenaline he had tried everything, and he had enjoyed the duel with Marquez for the lead. For him, the podium already felt like a win, and he hoped his story would inspire other people. At the podium ceremony he immediately cooled his wrist with ice.
Ducati one-two: Marquez celebrates his 25th sprint win
For Marquez it was his 25th win in a MotoGP sprint. Since sprints were introduced in 2023, no rider has won more of these races; Martin follows in the statistics with 20 wins, Bagnaia with 14. Marquez spoke of a strange sprint because of the red flag. He said he had been very focused and defended as well as possible. Once he had built a small lead, he tried to control the race.
Di Giannantonio was above all impressed by Martin. What the Spaniard had achieved with his injury was incredible, he said. He could not close the gap to Marquez in the end, but he was happy with second place. He wants to try again on Sunday. For Ducati, his pass on Martin means the title could be decided in Qatar.

Who scored the remaining points in the Qatar sprint?
Behind the podium, Raul Fernandez finished fourth on the Trackhouse Aprilia. Johann Zarco was fifth on the LCR Honda, Pedro Acosta sixth on the KTM.
The remaining points went to Ai Ogura, Enea Bastianini and Iker Lecuona. Lecuona only secured the last point for ninth place shortly before the end with a pass on Diogo Moreira. The sprint awards only half the points of a Grand Prix: twelve points for the win, nine for second, seven for third and finally one point for ninth.
Behind Moreira and Aldeguer came Brad Binder, Luca Marini, Franco Morbidelli, Maverick Viñales and Jake Dixon, who is standing in at Honda for the ill Joan Mir. The field was smaller than usual anyway because Yamaha is boycotting the Qatar Grand Prix. In the championship standings, Bezzecchi remains third with 332 points, ahead of Acosta with 299 points.
