BMW F 450 R: What the Teaser Reveals About the New A2 Naked Bike

With the F 450 GS, BMW launched a completely new platform for the A2 class in spring 2026. Developing a platform for just a single model makes little economic sense. That is why it has long been clear that further variants would follow. On Wednesday, 23 September, BMW Motorrad showed a first image on its social media channels. It shows a darkened motorcycle against a city backdrop. BMW has not yet given it a name, but the image leaves little doubt that this is the naked bike of the 450 family.

What does the BMW F 450 R teaser show?

The teaser shows an unfaired, muscular naked bike with an upside-down fork and a new, stepped headlight. The front end sits lower than on the GS and is pulled further forward.

Visually, the new model clearly takes its cue from its big sister, the S 1000 R with 170 hp (125 kW). This includes the high tank line with a broad hump and the radiator shrouds that reach far forward. The small TFT display above the LED light unit and the characteristic wheel spokes are also reminiscent of the big naked bike. The GS fairing parts are dropped entirely and replaced by a compact roadster front end.

At the rear, the split seat stands out. The rider’s seat is deeply sculpted, while the pillion seat sits a clear step above it. There is no visible silencer. This points to an exhaust system under the engine, which makes the right-hand side of the bike look tidier.

BMW itself gives an important hint in the accompanying text: the image has been edited with AI (“Enhanced with AI”). The production model may therefore differ in detail from the teaser.

Which engine will the BMW F 450 R get?

The F 450 R is likely to get the same engine as the F 450 GS: a water-cooled parallel twin with 420cc displacement. In the GS, it produces 48 hp (35 kW) at 8,750 rpm and delivers 43 Nm (32 lb-ft) at 6,750 rpm.

The teaser image provides several pieces of evidence for this. Two headers are clearly visible, and their routing matches that of the GS exactly. The oil filter is also positioned at the front towards the headers, as on the GS. The long, slightly banana-shaped swingarm also closely resembles the part on the enduro.

The engine has one special feature: its crankpins are offset by 135 degrees. This gives it a distinctive, more irregular sound than many other parallel twins. In the GS, power goes through a six-speed gearbox. It is conceivable that BMW will tune the engine slightly differently for the road. However, peak output is unlikely to change because of the A2 limit.

Chassis and equipment: what is likely to change compared with the GS

The biggest differences from the GS are expected in the chassis. The enduro uses a 43 mm upside-down fork with 180 mm of travel at the front, and 180 mm is also available at the rear. A roadster does not need that much suspension travel. Shorter travel and road-oriented geometry are therefore likely.

The image shows five-spoke cast wheels, presumably in road format with 17 inches front and rear. At the front, a single brake disc does the stopping, as on the GS. This single disc also makes it clear that this is not a larger naked bike. At the rear, a shock absorber adjustable for preload appears to be fitted. To save costs, BMW is likely to adopt the GS’s tubular steel frame, in which the engine serves as a stressed member.

The riding position looks upright, with wide handlebars and footpegs that are not mounted too far back. The seat appears to be low. That would make the F 450 R attractive for shorter riders and beginners.

When it comes to equipment, it seems likely that BMW will draw on the electronics of the GS. These include a 6.5-inch colour TFT display with smartphone connectivity, LED lighting, riding modes and traction control. It remains open whether the Easy Ride Clutch (ERC) will be on board. This electronically controlled clutch makes the clutch lever unnecessary when pulling away and shifting, even at a standstill. On the GS, the ERC is currently only available in the GS Trophy version. A higher-spec variant of the F 450 R could also receive it.

Why is weight so important for A2 riders?

The rule for the A2 class is that a motorcycle with 48 hp must weigh at least 175 kg (386 lbs) ready to ride. It may not be lighter at this power output, but it may be heavier.

The F 450 GS weighs 178 kg (392 lbs) ready to ride, putting it just above this limit. The F 450 R has no fairing, shorter suspension components and probably a smaller front wheel. It should therefore be lighter and could land very close to 175 kg. That would give it a better power-to-weight ratio than the GS and allow it to make full use of the A2 class limits. So far, only the Aprilia Tuono 457 achieves this in the segment with exactly these key figures. Other rivals for the F 450 R include models such as the KTM 390 Duke R.

What role does the F 450 R play in the 450 family?

After the F 450 GS, the F 450 R would be the second model on the new 450 platform and would become BMW’s entry-level roadster. BMW is thus repeating a pattern that already worked for the G 310 family.

The earlier single-cylinder range also consisted of the adventure bike G 310 GS, the naked bike G 310 R and the fully faired sports bike G 310 RR. However, the G 310 RR was never officially sold in Europe. The G 310 R has since been discontinued, and the new roadster could take over its role. Like the 310 models before them, the 450 models are built in India together with TVS Motor. The two companies have been working together since 2013.

BMW Motorrad boss Markus Flasch had already announced the expansion of the platform at EICMA in Milan. He said: “We will bring the spirit of the R, RR, and GS to new segments, and one of the segments that we will enter is the 450 two-cylinder segment.” He did not want to reveal any details at the time. But he stressed that one could work out for oneself “that the GS will not be the only model that we will bring”.

The sequence R, RR and GS suggests that a sporty model will follow the roadster. A fully faired prototype based on the 450 platform has already been spotted testing in India. It could come to market as the F 450 RR.

When will the BMW F 450 R be unveiled?

BMW will unveil the new model on Thursday, 1 October 2026, at 5 pm German time. This means the manufacturer is showing the naked bike ahead of EICMA in Milan, which takes place in early November 2026.

The F 450 R thus joins a series of new models for the 2027 model year that are being presented before the big show. The GS itself took a similar route: it was shown at EICMA in 2024 as the Concept F 450 GS and a year later as a production model. It is still unclear how much information BMW will release on 1 October. Full technical data including equipment are possible, but so are just further images of the model. BMW has not yet announced prices or a market launch for Germany.
