Ducati Panigale V4 SP Arrives in 2027: New Step Between V4 and V4 R

A Californian environmental agency has approved a Ducati Panigale V4 SP for the 2027 model year. The SP badge thus returns to the range for the first time since the previous Panigale generation.
  • Certification by the Californian air quality regulator CARB confirms a Panigale V4 SP for 2027
  • Same 1,103 cc engine as the other Panigale V4 models
  • Reveal expected in autumn, prices still open

New models often announce themselves not with a press release but with paperwork. That is exactly what has happened with the Ducati Panigale V4 SP. The variant shows up in documents from the California Air Resources Board, or CARB for short, for the 2027 model year. The agency checks whether a vehicle meets the emissions rules of the US state and issues what is known as an Executive Order for it. Without that document a motorcycle may not be sold in California. For the public it is therefore a reliable preview of what a manufacturer actually intends to bring to market in the coming months.

What exactly does the certification from California say?

The agency has granted the Ducati Panigale V4 SP approval for the 2027 model year. What is new here is not the entire range, but only this one variant.

The sequence can be traced clearly through the dates. Back in March 2026, CARB certified the 2027 programme of the Panigale V4 with 1,103 cc. In July, according to media reports, Ducati filed a revised version. It explicitly names the SP model. The same supplementary filing also lists a version badged Ducati Performance. At Ducati that name usually refers to a complete accessory exhaust system.

The document gives away nothing more. Technical figures, equipment or production numbers cannot be read from it. Essentially only one thing is confirmed: the Ducati Panigale V4 SP exists and is being prepared for the North American market.

Where does the Panigale V4 SP fit into the model range?

The new variant is likely to slot in between the standard V4 and the V4 R. That fills a gap which has so far been left open in the current line-up.

The V4 R is the homologation model for racing. Factory and customer teams contest the Superbike World Championship and the British Superbike series on the basis of it. Because the rules call for a smaller displacement, it uses its own engine with 998 cc. In Europe it produces 218 hp (160 kW) and 114.5 Nm (84 lb-ft), and Ducati quotes a kerb weight without fuel of 186.5 kg (411 lb). The standard V4 and the V4 S, by contrast, use the 1,103 cc engine with 216 hp (158.9 kW) at 13,500 rpm and 120.9 Nm (89 lb-ft) at 11,250 rpm. That is exactly the powerplant used in the new SP.

The gaps within the range are considerable. In Germany the Panigale V4 starts at 28,190 euros, the V4 S at 35,290 euros and the V4 R at 43,990 euros. In the USA, Ducati asks a list price of 27,795 US dollars for the V4, 35,595 US dollars for the V4 S and 49,995 US dollars for the V4 R, each before freight and taxes. So there is plenty of room between the V4 S and the V4 R for another model.

With the predecessors the positioning was similar. According to media reports, the old SP and the later SP2 sat above the V4 S, but below the V4 R.

Carbon wheels, Brembo brakes and a dry clutch defined the previous SP models

What technology did the earlier SP models use?

The old SP variants stood out above all for lighter components and track-focused details. Exactly those ingredients are considered likely for the Ducati Panigale V4 SP 2027 as well.

Ducati brought out the first Panigale V4 SP for the 2021 model year, with the SP2 following a year later. The SP2 spec sheet lists carbon wheels with five split spokes that are 1.4 kg lighter than the forged aluminium wheels of the V4 S. Inertia drops by 26 percent at the front and 46 percent at the rear as a result, which makes turn-in easier. Added to that are Brembo Stylema R calipers, a radial master cylinder with adjustable lever travel, a lightweight 520 chain kit and machined aluminium footpegs with carbon heel guards. The tank is brushed aluminium and remains visibly unpainted. The Ducati Data Analyzer+ with GPS module was also fitted as standard, a data logger that records lap times and riding data.

The most striking feature, however, sits in the drivetrain. Instead of the hydraulically operated clutch, the SP and SP2 used a dry clutch of the STM-EVO SBK type. Clutches of this kind run without an oil bath, respond more directly and produce the rattle typical of Ducati. Experts expect this solution on the new version too.

Does it stay with the familiar 1,103 cc engine?

Yes. The Ducati Panigale V4 SP uses the same four-cylinder with 1,103 cc as the other road-legal Panigale V4 models of the 2027 model year.

The Desmosedici Stradale comes from MotoGP development and works with a counter-rotating crankshaft. Whether the SP gets its own tune is an open question. With the previous generation that was not the case: the SP2 produced 215.5 hp (158.5 kW) at 13,000 rpm and 123.6 Nm (91.2 lb-ft) at 9,500 rpm, while for North America the figures were 210 hp (154.5 kW) and 122.8 Nm (90.6 lb-ft). That put it on the level of the Panigale V4 offered at the same time. Ducati quoted its dry weight at 173 kg (381 lb), and 194.5 kg (428.7 lb) ready to ride.

The link between the SP and the Ducati Performance version filed alongside it will be interesting. On the SP2 30° Anniversario 916 special series, a race kit from Akrapovic is said to unlock 228 hp (168 kW). A comparable package would be conceivable for the new version as well, but that has not been confirmed.

When will the Ducati Panigale V4 SP be unveiled?

An official premiere is expected for autumn 2026. Ducati traditionally bundles its new models in the World Première series, which usually runs in the weeks before the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan.

Only then are all the details likely to be settled, from the equipment to possible production numbers and the price. Until then the certification remains the only solid clue. It does show, however, that planning is well advanced, because no manufacturer applies for emissions approval for models that are still up for debate.

For the Panigale range as a whole the SP would be another branch. Alongside the V4, V4 S and V4 R, Ducati currently offers the V4 Tricolore, the V4 S 100 from the Centenario series limited to 100 units and the replica marking the MotoGP title of Marc Marquez, among others. The 2027 model year is therefore getting broader again rather than narrower.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does SP mean at Ducati?

SP stands for Sport Production. Ducati uses the badge for particularly track-focused versions of a production model, which usually bring lighter wheels, stronger brakes and race-derived components.

  • How much power does the Ducati Panigale V4 SP have?

Official figures are not yet available. The SP uses the familiar 1,103 cc four-cylinder, which produces 216 hp (158.9 kW) and 120.9 Nm (89 lb-ft) in the standard V4. The earlier SP2 made 215.5 hp (158.5 kW).

  • When will the Ducati Panigale V4 SP reach the market?

The variant is certified for the 2027 model year. The reveal is expected in autumn 2026 as part of the Ducati World Première, and a specific sales start has not been named so far.

  • What does the Ducati Panigale V4 SP cost?

A price is not known. For context: the V4 S starts at 35,290 euros in Germany (35,595 US dollars in the USA), the V4 R at 43,990 euros (49,995 US dollars).

  • How does the V4 SP differ from the V4 R?

The V4 R is the homologation model for the Superbike World Championship and has its own engine with 998 cc. The SP instead relies on the 1,103 cc powerplant of the road models and adds lighter and more track-capable components.
