KTM is expanding its range in the Supermoto segment with the new KTM 125 SMC R and KTM 390 SMC R models.  With their compact design and powerful single-cylinder engine, the two motorcycles are intended to appeal to both beginners and experienced riders.

Model overview: Supermoto for a wide audience

Thanks to their 17-inch wheels, grippy tires and long suspension travel, the KTM 125 SMC R and KTM 390 SMC R offer a sporty riding experience that is still suitable for everyday use.  Both models are equipped with modern technology designed to improve handling and at the same time increase user-friendliness.

Design and ergonomics: slim, compact and functional

The design of the new supermotos is based on a slim silhouette.  A compact 9-liter metal tank ensures a narrow design and improves ergonomics, especially when standing on the pegs or turning into tight corners.  The fairing elements have been designed to protect the tank in the event of a fall.

Frame and chassis: New steel trellis frame

Both models are based on a newly developed, two-part steel trellis tube frame.  This has been specially adapted for off-road use and differs from the platform of the smaller Duke models thanks to a modified steering head angle and modified rigidity profiles.  The footrest position has been optimized to support aggressive Supermoto-style handling.

The new, bolted rear frame is also made of steel and offers the option of fitting a single seat.  The swingarm design comes from the current Adventure series and has been optimized for Supermoto use.

Chassis: WP APEX suspension with 230 mm suspension travel

The KTM 390 SMC R is equipped with a 43 mm WP APEX Open Cartridge fork at the front, which offers 230 mm of suspension travel.  The fork allows the compression and rebound damping to be adjusted in 30 clicks without tools.  At the rear, a WP APEX shock absorber with 230 mm travel provides damping, with rebound adjustment in 20 clicks.

The KTM 125 SMC R uses the same fork, but without adjustment options.  The rear shock absorber only allows the preload to be adjusted.

Brakes: Powerful stoppers for both models

Both models rely on a 320 mm brake disk with radially mounted Bybre brake callipers at the front.  At the rear, a 240 mm disk provides the necessary deceleration.

Engine: New LC4c single-cylinder engines

The new single-cylinder engines with the designation LC4c are based on the technology of the current Duke models.  They meet the Euro 5+ standard and are designed to impress with their compact design and lower weight.

  • KTM 390 SMC R: The engine has a displacement of 398.7 cm³ and produces 45 hp (33 kW) at 8,500 rpm. The maximum torque is 39 Nm at 7,000 rpm.
  • KTM 125 SMC R: The single-cylinder 124.99 cm³ engine produces 15 hp (11 kW) at 10,000 rpm and delivers a torque of 11.5 Nm at 7,750 rpm.

Both engines are equipped with a Bosch injection system, which is intended to enable optimum combustion and lower emissions.  The new service intervals provide for the first inspection after 1,000 km, after which maintenance is scheduled every 10,000 km.  Valve clearance checks are carried out every 20,000 km.

Further technical details

  • Gearbox: Six-speed gearbox with optimized shift travel. The KTM 390 SMC R can be optionally equipped with a Quickshifter+.
  • Exhaust: Both models are equipped with a new stainless steel exhaust system that does not require a rear silencer and reduces the overall weight by 2 kg.
  • Electronics: The KTM 390 SMC R has selectable riding modes (Street and Sport) as well as traction control that can be switched off. Both models are equipped with two-channel ABS from Bosch.
  • Display: The new 4.2-inch TFT display offers a clear display of all important information and is compatible with the KTM Connect app.

Availability of PowerParts and PowerWear

To further individualize the new models, KTM offers a wide range of PowerParts.  These include both performance upgrades and visual customizations.  In addition, there is a specially developed PowerWear collection tailored to the needs of Supermoto riders.
