Kawasaki KLE 650 official: More touring than rally despite a 21-inch front wheel

Kawasaki is giving the KLE 500 a bigger sibling with 70 hp, and it is clearly focused on long tours rather than off-road sport. Even the base version comes with cruise control and traction control, while the SE adds a quickshifter, a colour TFT display and tubeless spoked wheels, among other things.
  • 649 cc parallel twin with 70 hp (51.6 kW), electronic throttle bodies and a balancer shaft
  • 21-inch front, 17-inch rear, 210 and 196 mm of suspension travel, seat height 870 mm
  • Prices in Germany start at 8,920 euros, the SE costs 10,420 euros

With the Kawasaki KLE 650 2027, the KLE family grows by a second model. At first glance, the relationship to the recently unveiled KLE 500 is obvious. The painted bodywork surfaces are larger, though, and the frame houses the familiar 650 twin in a revised version. The rally look and the big front wheel suggest gravel tracks. Kawasaki itself puts something else front and centre: among rally-style models between 600 and 800 cc with a 21-inch front wheel, the KLE 650 is meant to stand out above all for comfort over long distances. That shows in the suspension setup as much as in the seat, wind protection and luggage system. For the 2027 model year, the new range is therefore one of Kawasaki’s most important new arrivals.

Where does the KLE 650 fit into Kawasaki’s line-up?

The KLE 650 sits above the KLE 500 and is the enduro alternative to the Versys 650. The KLE 500 makes 45 hp and is aimed at riders with an A2 licence. The Versys 650 also uses a 650 twin, but rolls on 17-inch wheels with road tyres.

The 650 twin has been available as a crossover under the Versys name since 2006. Until now, a version with enduro suspension and a big front wheel was missing from the line-up in this class. According to Kawasaki, the KLE 650 is the brand’s first rally-inspired adventure model with the new generation of its middleweight engine.

Visually, it is clearly part of the family. The tall, compact front, the slim tank area and the tail inspired by the KX motocross models are familiar from the KLE 500. The wheel sizes have tradition, too: the first KLE 500 from 1991 already ran a 21-inch front and 17-inch rear.

How much horsepower does the Kawasaki KLE 650 have?

The 649 cc parallel twin produces 70 hp (51.6 kW) in European spec. Kawasaki has not yet published a torque figure or the engine speeds for the peak values.

For comparison: in previous Kawasaki models, the 650 engine made a maximum of 67 hp. Kawasaki attributes the small gain mainly to electronic throttle bodies. They measure 38 mm in diameter and work together with revised intake and exhaust paths. Valve timing and valve overlap were also adjusted, and the compression ratio is 10.6:1. The headers are 630 mm long. A slim airbox with two intake ducts is also meant to reduce intake noise on long stages.

The tuning has two goals. Below 4,000 rpm the engine should pull strongly and smoothly, while from around 6,000 rpm it should still rev freely. Off-road, the power should arrive predictably.

The crankshaft has a 180-degree crankpin offset. A balancer shaft dampens the resulting vibrations. The cylinders are made of coated aluminium without separate liners, which makes the engine more compact. Power goes through a six-speed gearbox. The new assist and slipper clutch needs less lever effort. At the same time, it prevents the rear wheel from hopping or locking during quick downshifts. Behind the radiator, a cover directs warm air to the side, away from the rider.

Kawasaki has not yet listed the Smartride automatic clutch, which it is introducing on the KLE 500 SE for 2027, for the KLE 650.

Why is the KLE 650’s suspension geared more towards the road?

Kawasaki combines long suspension travel with a setup aimed primarily at calm, comfortable behaviour on tarmac. Compared with the KLE 500, the fork is sprung more firmly and the shock more softly.

Specifically, the fork spring rate rises from 9 to 10 N/mm, while at the rear it drops from 90 to 75 N/mm. This is meant to help the tyre keep better contact with the road. Up front is a 43 mm KYB upside-down fork with 210 mm of travel. The Uni-Trak rear shock offers 196 mm of travel, and preload is steplessly adjustable.

The backbone is a trellis frame made of high-tensile steel that weighs 16.9 kg. The engine is a stressed member. The new steel box-section swingarm is said to be 500 grams lighter than the KLE 500’s while being stiffer vertically. At 1,555 mm and 28 degrees, wheelbase and rake match the smaller sibling. Trail grows slightly from 104 to 106 mm, which is meant to improve straight-line stability. The handlebar sits in rubber mounts so that fewer vibrations reach the rider. Fork tube guards are integrated into the front mudguard.

Wheels, tyres and brakes

Both versions run on spoked wheels with aluminium rims. The base model has tube-type tyres, while the SE has tubeless tyres. For this, Kawasaki worked with Dunlop to tune the Trailmax Mixtour. Its flat tread blocks and large contact areas suit the focus on paved roads.

Braking is handled by two 300 mm discs up front and a 230 mm disc at the rear, each with two-piston calipers. ABS can be switched off for off-road riding via a switch on the right handlebar. After the next restart, it is active again on both wheels. On public roads, local regulations may require ABS to be switched on.

What equipment does the base KLE 650 already have?

Even the standard model comes with cruise control and traction control (KTRC) as standard. The traction control offers two levels: a less intrusive one for sporty riding and one that intervenes earlier in low-grip conditions.

The cruise control is operated on the left side of the handlebar. Plus and minus buttons adjust the stored speed. It disengages as soon as the rider brakes, pulls the clutch, shifts gears or rolls the throttle back past the closed position. A stronger traction control intervention also ends cruise control. The cruise control is only possible thanks to the electronic throttle bodies.

The cockpit features a new 5-inch LCD. It is mounted high and angled so that it is easy to read even when standing. Besides speed, rpm and gear, it shows information such as remaining range, fuel consumption and service intervals. Via Bluetooth, the display pairs with the Rideology app. This makes vehicle data, maintenance information and recorded rides with GPS tracks available on the smartphone. Call and message notifications appear on the display.

Lighting is full LED. The headlight is split into three parts, with two low-beam elements at the top and the high beam below. A quickshifter is available as an accessory for the base model. The handlebar is made of steel, and a plastic skid plate with a raised front section for the oil filter protects the engine.

How high is the KLE 650’s seat and what can be adjusted?

As standard, the rider sits 870 mm high. An optional rider seat lowers this by 30 mm.

The rider and passenger seats are stepped. The higher pillion seat supports the rider’s back. With the two ERGO-FIT seats from the accessory range, there are four combinations in total. Combining the standard rider seat with the low pillion seat creates a continuous flat surface. It offers more freedom of movement or room for luggage.

The riding position is upright because the wide handlebar moves further forward and the footpegs sit slightly further forward. The screen can be adjusted in three steps without much effort, with a range of 55 mm. Transparent side panels at the front provide additional wind protection without blocking the view downwards too much.

So that the rider does not get caught when standing, the side panels and engine covers are designed flat. Under the rubber footpeg inserts is a serrated surface, and the rubbers can be removed without tools. The tank holds 16 litres and is slim. The subframe can carry two panniers and a top case at the same time. Because the silencer is routed upwards, the cases sit symmetrically and close to the bike.

What does the KLE 650 SE offer in addition?

The SE costs 1,500 euros more and mainly adds comfort and touring equipment. This includes a bi-directional quickshifter, a 5-inch colour TFT display and spoked wheels for tubeless tyres.

The quickshifter works from 2,000 rpm, so both upshifts and downshifts are possible without the clutch. The tubeless tyres have a practical advantage when travelling: a puncture can be repaired without removing the wheel and changing an inner tube.

The TFT display offers two views, one of which shows navigation prompts in a large rally-style layout. Brightness and the switch between light and dark backgrounds can be adjusted automatically if desired. The display also shows information such as battery voltage, riding time, average speed and a gear shift recommendation. Settings can also be changed via the app. Turn-by-turn navigation and voice control require a licence. Where these functions are available depends on the respective market.

A screen that is 106 mm taller than on the base model provides more wind protection. The hand guards are reinforced with metal. On top of that come a light aluminium handlebar from D.I.D, a larger aluminium engine guard and a USB-C socket in the cockpit.

When is the Kawasaki KLE 650 2027 coming and how much does it cost?

In Germany, the KLE 650 costs from 8,920 euros (around 9,945 US dollars) and the SE from 10,420 euros (around 11,620 US dollars), each including delivery costs. Information on the German market launch still varies: both December 2026 and February or March 2027 have been mentioned.

In the Benelux countries, dealers are expected to offer both versions from mid-March 2027. The base model comes in Metallic Matte Graphenesteel Gray with Ebony. For the SE, buyers can choose between Pearl Storm Gray and Pearl Blizzard White, each combined with Ebony and Golden Blazed Green.

European dealers also offer three editions that Kawasaki equips with genuine accessories: Top Case, Rally and Adventure Tourer. Exactly which parts are included in the packages is not yet known. The accessory catalogue ranges from panniers with mounts and a top case carrier with passenger grab handles to heated grips and LED fog lights, a centre stand, crash bars and a radiator guard. A GPS mount, a luggage rack and the tall screen are also available individually.

Two important figures are still missing: Kawasaki has given neither a weight nor a torque figure.
