Jorge Martin After Hungary Crash: Penalty for Brno and Impact on Championship Battle

Jorge Martin escaped the massive first-corner crash at the Hungarian Grand Prix without fractures. The FIM Stewards Panel nevertheless handed the Aprilia factory rider a Double Long Lap Penalty, ruling him responsible for the incident.
  • Martin and Bezzecchi sustained only bruises according to Aprilia, no fractures
  • Double Long Lap Penalty to be served at the next Grand Prix in Brno
  • Four more riders went down, Martin remains 20 points behind Bezzecchi

Shortly after the start at Balaton, it was clear that this race day would be remembered above all for a single moment. In the first corner, Martin lost control of his machine and triggered a chain reaction that caught several frontrunners. The most important news of the day was that nobody was seriously injured. The incident does, however, carry sporting consequences that will follow Martin in the weeks ahead.

What Happened at the Start of the Hungarian GP in Turn 1?

Martin lost control of his Aprilia while braking into turn one from eighth on the grid and collided with the side of his teammate Marco Bezzecchi. The impact brought the championship leader down, who in turn took out Fabio di Giannantonio, Fermin Aldeguer and Raul Fernandez. Within moments, five riders were on the ground while the race continued at the front.

Three of the affected Aprilia machines and Aldeguer’s Ducati retired on the spot. Only di Giannantonio managed to bring his damaged machine back to the pits, rejoin the race and salvage a twelfth-place finish.

How Seriously Were Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi Injured?

Both Martin and Bezzecchi escaped without fractures. The two riders were examined at the circuit’s medical center after the crash, where initial checks ruled out serious injuries.

Aprilia subsequently gave the all-clear. According to the team, Martin sustained only bruises to his back and right foot, while Bezzecchi suffered bruising to his right leg and right hand. Given the force of the incident and the number of riders involved, the outcome was comparatively mild.

What Penalty Does Jorge Martin Face?

The FIM Stewards Panel imposed a Double Long Lap Penalty on Martin, to be served at the next Grand Prix. The Brno round is scheduled from June 19 to 21, meaning Martin will have to work the penalty into his race distance there.

Should Martin not compete at Brno, the penalty will remain in effect until the next time he lines up for a race. The stewards justified their decision by citing the creation of a dangerous situation for multiple riders and causing a crash. In their statement, they noted: “As a first offence for the season, the appropriate penalty in this case is a Double Long Lap Penalty.”

Why Is the Penalty Comparatively Harsh?

Race-start incidents are generally penalized more severely than mistakes made later in a race, because many more riders can be caught up in a single error in the tightly packed first corner. That is exactly the risk that materialized in Hungary.

Moreover, this was not an isolated case. Already during the Motegi sprint last season, Martin lost control in a similar first-corner situation and crashed into Bezzecchi. That incident drew the same sanction. In response to repeated start-line crashes, the series is also working on tightened regulations for grid procedures that are set to be phased in over the coming races.

What Does the Crash Mean for the Championship Battle?

Despite scoring zero, Bezzecchi remains at the top of the overall standings, followed by Martin and di Giannantonio. The double DNF for the two Aprilia factory riders did, however, have a noticeable impact on the balance of power in the 2026 title fight.

Since both riders came away empty-handed, Martin still trails his teammate by 20 points. Di Giannantonio, the only one of the fallen riders to make it to the finish, salvaged four points with his twelfth place. The main beneficiary of the rivals’ misfortune was race winner Marc Marquez, who closed the gap to Bezzecchi by 30 points over the weekend and moved up to fifth in the overall standings behind Pedro Acosta.
